Grandparent Camp: Making Memories That Point Little Hearts to Jesus
Some of the sweetest memories a child will ever carry aren't made at expensive theme parks or elaborate vacations.
They're made around a kitchen table...
...on a nature trail...
...while baking cookies...
...or sitting under a blanket of stars.
That's the beauty of Grandparent Camp.
It doesn't require a fancy schedule or a big budget. It simply requires willing hearts and a desire to spend intentional time together.
As grandparents, we have a remarkable privilege. We aren't responsible for raising our grandchildren—that belongs to their parents. But we have a unique opportunity to reinforce the faith being nurtured at home and church.
What if Grandparent Camp became more than a few fun summer days?
What if it became a place where children experienced the joy of walking with Jesus?
Begin With Prayer
Before your grandchildren ever arrive, pray.
Pray that God will fill your home with laughter.
Pray for meaningful conversations.
Pray for teachable moments you could never schedule.
Pray that your grandchildren leave knowing they are deeply loved—not only by you, but by their Heavenly Father.
Sometimes the greatest moments of Grandparent Camp are the ones God surprises us with.
Keep Wonder Alive
Children naturally see God's fingerprints everywhere.
A butterfly emerging from its chrysalis.
A tiny ladybug crawling across a leaf.
A thunderstorm rolling across the sky.
Take walks together.
Collect unusual rocks.
Watch birds.
Plant flowers.
Ask questions like:
"What does this teach us about God?"
Wonder often becomes worship.
Build Faith Into Ordinary Moments
Faith doesn't always need a formal lesson.
While baking bread, talk about Jesus being the Bread of Life.
When planting seeds, discuss how God grows faith in our hearts.
As you watch a sunset, thank God for creating such beauty.
Ordinary moments often become extraordinary when we intentionally point children toward their Creator.
Read Great Stories Together
Set aside time every day to read aloud.
Choose stories that stir imagination, encourage courage, and reveal God's goodness.
Pause often.
Ask questions.
Laugh together.
Talk about what you'd do if you were one of the characters.
Some of the deepest spiritual conversations begin with a simple story.
Serve Someone Together
One of the greatest gifts we can give our grandchildren is helping them discover the joy of serving others.
Bake cookies for a neighbor.
Deliver flowers to someone who lives alone.
Draw cheerful pictures for nursing home residents.
Collect canned goods for a local food pantry.
Children rarely forget the happiness they experience while blessing someone else.
Create Simple Traditions
Grandchildren love traditions.
A pancake breakfast.
A special bedtime prayer.
A family movie night.
Homemade ice cream on the porch.
A silly camp song.
These traditions become anchors that children look forward to year after year.
Long after they've forgotten what day they made bird feeders or painted flowerpots, they'll remember how Grandparent Camp made them feel.
End Every Day With Gratitude
Before bedtime, gather everyone together.
Ask three simple questions:
What made you smile today?
Where did you see God's goodness today?
Who can we pray for tonight?
Those few quiet minutes often become the most meaningful part of the day.
The Greatest Souvenir
Children won't remember every craft.
They may forget which game they won.
The snacks will disappear.
The projects will eventually be thrown away.
But they will remember how your home felt.
They'll remember that Grandpa prayed before meals.
That Grandma opened her Bible.
That kindness mattered.
That laughter filled the rooms.
Most of all, they'll remember that Jesus wasn't just someone you talked about on Sunday.
He was part of everyday life.
And perhaps years from now, when they gather their own grandchildren around a kitchen table, they'll discover they're passing along something much greater than memories.
They're passing along a legacy of faith.
That's the greatest Grandparent Camp of all.

One of my greatest joys is watching our grandchildren discover that following Jesus is an adventure. They don't need grandparents with endless energy or elaborate plans. They simply need grandparents who love them well, make time for them, and naturally weave God's love into everyday moments.
I've learned that little hearts often listen best while little hands are busy. Some of our sweetest conversations have happened while stirring cookie batter, walking a trail, or cuddling up with a favorite book. Those ordinary moments have become holy moments.
My prayer is that every grandparent who reads this will be encouraged. You don't have to do everything. You simply have to be present. God has a beautiful way of using simple acts of love to plant seeds that can bear fruit for generations.
