Have You Ever Wondered What Babies Do All Day Before They’re Born?

What's Really Going On Inside the Womb? Have you ever wondered what babies do all day before they're born?

Do they sleep? Do they play? Do they dream? Do they know when Mom is eating ice cream?

And perhaps the biggest question of all... Why in the world do some of them refuse to come out?

That last question became very personal for our family. When our daughter announced she was pregnant—literally just days after conception—I was absolutely amazed by how connected she already felt to the tiny little life growing inside her. It was worlds apart from my own first pregnancy.
To be fair...my pregnancy experience was a little different.
I still laugh remembering that it was my mother who finally informed me that I wasn't dying of some mysterious disease—I was pregnant! My daily morning nausea apparently gave it away.
(Welcome to pregnancy...1980s style.)
Fast forward a few decades, and everything has changed.
Today's parents can watch their babies grow through incredible ultrasound technology. They celebrate every tiny heartbeat, every little kick, every hiccup, every stretch, and every wiggle. They begin bonding with their baby long before they ever hold them in their arms.
I absolutely loved hearing our daughter tell us about her little boy's daily adventures.
She knew when he was sleeping.
She knew when he was practicing what felt like Olympic gymnastics.
She knew he loved music.
She knew he responded when she sang.
She knew he enjoyed it when she danced around the house.
She was pretty convinced he appreciated ice cream as much as she did.
And then...
Just when everyone else thought it was time for him to make his grand entrance...
He had other plans.
Apparently, his cozy little womb had room service, climate control, surround sound, and the world's most comfortable accommodations.
Why would anyone leave?
The more we laughed about his determination to stay put, the more my imagination began to run wild.
What if babies actually had opinions about being born?
What if they were perfectly content where they were?
What if they had one more game to play before making their big debut?
Those silly family conversations eventually became Zoom Zoom Out the Womb!
What has surprised me most, however, isn't how much adults enjoy the story.
It's how completely children fall in love with it. Little ones seem fascinated by what life might be like inside Mommy's tummy. They may not always know how to ask those questions, but you can see the curiosity all over their faces.
One of my greatest joys is hearing from parents who tell me their toddler insists on reading Zoom Zoom Out the Womb! every single night.
Before long, those same little readers have memorized the rhymes and are "reading" the entire story back to Mom and Dad—complete with dramatic expressions, funny voices, and plenty of giggles.
Even more meaningful to me is watching children begin to understand that the little baby growing inside Mommy isn't imaginary. He's real. She's real. They're wonderfully human, deeply loved, and incredibly precious—just like they are.
Someone already laughing, growing, stretching, and preparing for their own grand entrance into the world.
What a beautiful truth to plant in the hearts of the next generation.

Books have a wonderful way of helping children understand big ideas. So the next time your child or grandchild asks, "What's the baby doing in Mommy's tummy?" you'll have the perfect answer. Just open Zoom Zoom Out the Womb! and let the adventure begin!
