THE NEUROSCIENCE BEHIND PROVERBS 22:6

WAIT... Did I just stumble across the neuroscience behind Proverbs 22:6?

Moms and dads, this stopped me in my tracks.

We've all heard the familiar words:

"Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it." — Proverbs 22:6

But what if modern neuroscience actually helps explain why those early years matter so much?

Here's what scientists have discovered:

In the first years of life, a baby's brain forms an astonishing number of neural connections—far more than an adult brain. In fact, toddlers have roughly twice as many synaptic connections as adults. As children grow, their brains strengthen the connections they use most and gradually eliminate the ones they don't. This remarkable process is called synaptic pruning.

In other words, repeated experiences shape the brain.

The words children hear.
The love they receive.
The habits they practice.
The truth they learn.
The examples they watch.

These repeated experiences become the pathways their brains are wired to follow.

It's a little like pruning a young tree. Careful pruning determines the shape and strength of the mature tree. In much the same way, the experiences of childhood help shape the adults our children become.

I couldn't help but smile when I read this research.

Long before neuroscientists had MRI machines or understood synapses, God had already told parents that intentional, faithful training in a child's early years matters. Scripture wasn't waiting for science to validate it—but it's fascinating when scientific discoveries point in the same direction as God's wisdom.

That is both encouraging and sobering.

Encouraging because the daily investments we make—reading together, praying together, showing kindness, teaching obedience, laughing, playing, and modeling Christ—are shaping our children's hearts and minds in ways we cannot always see.

Sobering because those early years pass so quickly. Before we know it, they're grown and making their own way in the world.

But don't let that overwhelm you.

Let it inspire you.

Every bedtime story.
Every prayer.
Every hug.
Every Bible lesson.
Every conversation.

God uses those ordinary moments to do extraordinary work.

So let's embrace what both Scripture and neuroscience remind us:

The early years matter.

And there is no greater privilege than helping shape a young heart to know, love, and follow the Author of Life.

"Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it." — Proverbs 22:6
